Why do you need a chimney cap?

You need to cover your flue because of the following reasons:

• If your flue does not have a cap the chances are, rain can go inside the chimney and turn off the stove.

• Animals such as birds will take advantage of the warmth of the flue and can make their nests in your flue. A flue cap keeps them away from your flue.

• Mostly in metal flues there is air or some insulation between the caps. Without a flue cap, moisture and dust can enter between these layers and it can reduce the life of a flue.

Sometimes the flue caps are also required when an existing flue cap has been torn out and you cannot mend the previous one. Or when the existing cap is causing wind problems.

Types of chimney caps:

Single Flue chimney caps: These caps are designed to tie closely to your clay flue at the top of your fire hearth. The flue cap rests on the top of your flue tile and at the base it is zipped with pressure screws. It is available in stainless steel, copper and black galvanized steel.

Chimney Caps for Metal Chimneys: Solid pack and air cooled chimneys are available in the market for every model. These flues caps are constructed with stainless steel so you need not worry about the corrosion and rust.

Wind Resistant Chimney Caps: To the problems of downdrafts and back puffing in your flue, this is a perfect solution.

Advantages of installing a chimney cap:

• It keeps animals, especially birds from sitting on your flue and does not allow them to built nests at the top.

• In rainy season this flue cap does not allow rain to enter the flue and reduces the flue smell that usually arises in summer.

• It melts ice and steams rain that settles on top of the flue and thus increases the life of the flue.

Disadvantages of installing a chimney:

• An improperly designed or installed flue can reduce the draft.

• Sometimes it has small openings due to which the soot and ashes can clog after heavy use. This can reduce the life of your flue and stove/fire hearth.

To help battle dust infiltration, the tool features a sealed motor and switch, a must for any serious drywall tool. It also sports a quick-and-easy, tool-free bit-changing system and comes with both 1/8 and 1/4 inch collets. We really like the bump-off switch for quick tool shutdown and the simple and effective tool-free depth adjustments. Like other rotary cutout tools, this one uses spiral cutting bits, which work equally well plunging into a cut as they do laterally. In our test we found the DeWalt to be smooth running with low vibration. We had no problem plunging and cutting through 1-1/2 inches of solid birch, whizzing through drywall, and tearing through tile. Ceramic Tile Drilling

Usually all home owners in some point or the other will like to have a towel stand or a special mirror place in the bathroom and that will involve drilling some kind of a hole into the ceramic tiles. Ceramic tiles are a different ball game when it comes to drilling as they are hard and when applied with extra force and can break.

The composition of ceramic tiles used in most homes is that they have a soft inner core and then thin layer of hard glaze which means that once you drilled a hole into the outer layer the rest of the drilling will just be a breeze. The ceramic tiles can vary in hardness across countries or even regions and that hardness is purely based on the clay and the silica content in the tile. Also, the hardness can vary depending on how much time the ceramic tile was baked in the kiln.

Most of the ceramic tile available in the market today can be drilled into by using the carbide drill bit. These bits generate a lot of heat and hence you need to make sure that you have adequate oil or water to cool the bit otherwise it can be permanently damaged. The diamond drill bit is another solution but they are expensive though they work beautifully for drilling holes into glass or ceramic tiles. The soft tiles can be drilled with carbide drill bits but harder ones will surely need diamond drill bits.

As far as the drill goes never ever have a hammer drill to drill through ceramic tiles. It causes enough vibrations that it will be crack the tile. You will have to use the other type of drills available and also make sure that you drill through the hard glazed covering of the tile very very slowly and by that I mean using absolutely the slowest drill speeds.

The ceramic tile drilling is a very slow process initially as if you get it wrong you will have either the cracked ceramic tile or scratch marks on the tile. The scratch marks can happen if you apply more than the needed pressure the drill may slip away and scratch the surface of the tile.

Be careful and approach slowly and your work will be done without any damage to the tile.
